Pumpkin Decorating With Kids
You can decorate a pumpkin with children using no blades at all. Trace a stencil and paint inside the lines, stick on felt or paper shapes cut from the same design, use washable markers, or wrap the pumpkin in fabric. Every one of these uses the same stencils a carver would use.

Paint inside a traced outline
Tape the stencil on, trace the shapes, take the paper off, and let them paint. The outline keeps young hands on track.
Cut the shapes from paper instead
Cut the design out of black paper or felt and glue it on. The adult does the scissors, the child does the placing.
Washable markers
The lowest-effort option and completely reversible. Trace the design straight onto the skin.
Stickers and googly eyes
Use the stencil as a guide for where things go, so the face still reads properly from a distance.
Keep it safe
No blades, no flame. An LED light inside a hollowed pumpkin is safe. An unhollowed painted pumpkin needs no light at all.
