How to Paint a Pumpkin With a Stencil

Tape the printed stencil to a clean, dry pumpkin, trace around the black shapes with a washable marker, remove the paper, then fill the shapes with acrylic craft paint. The same stencils that work for carving work for painting, and nothing sharp is involved.

Step by step

  1. 1. Clean and dry the pumpkin

Wipe it down. Paint does not stick to a dusty or damp skin.

  2. 2. Trim and tape the stencil

Snip the edges so the paper lies flat on the curve, then tape it on.

  3. 3. Trace the shapes

Draw around each black shape with a washable marker or a pencil.

  4. 4. Take the paper off

Lift the paper away. You now have an outline to paint inside.

  5. 5. Paint inside the lines

Acrylic craft paint works well. Two thin coats beat one thick one.

  6. 6. Let it dry

Give it an hour. Add a second colour or an outline once the first coat is dry.

Why painting is worth it

A painted pumpkin lasts far longer than a carved one, because you never break the skin. It also keeps small children away from blades entirely.

Which designs work best

Bold shapes with few pieces. Silhouettes are ideal. Very fine detail is hard to paint neatly, so save the lacework for carving.

Questions

Can I use carving stencils for painting?
Yes. Trace around the black shapes instead of cutting them out, then fill them with paint.
What paint sticks to a pumpkin?
Acrylic craft paint works well on a clean, dry pumpkin. Two thin coats beat one thick one.
Does a painted pumpkin last longer?
Much longer. You never break the skin, so it does not dry out the way a carved one does.
