How to Move a Stencil Onto a Pumpkin
Tape the printed page to your pumpkin, poke holes along every black edge about an eighth of an inch apart, then take the paper off and carve the dots. Plain printer paper works. You do not need special stencil paper, and you should never carve through wet paper.

Step by step
1. Print on plain paper
Any home printer or copier works. Plain paper is all you need.
2. Resize if you need to
Hold the page against the pumpkin. Photocopy it bigger or smaller to fit. Most copiers scale from 50% to 200%.
3. Trim close to the design
Cut around the design, about half an inch out. Less paper means less fighting the curve.
4. Snip the edges and tape it on
Cut small slits into the edge of the paper, in toward the design. Now it lies flat on a round pumpkin. Tape it down with painter's tape.
5. Poke the outline
Use a pin, a pushpin, a needle tool or a tracing wheel. Make a hole every eighth of an inch along every black edge. Closer on curves.
6. Take the paper off
Pull the tape and lift the paper away. This is the step people skip. Never carve through the paper.
7. Carve the dots
Join the holes with your blade. Cut the smallest shapes first, while the pumpkin is still strong.
Why the paper comes off first
Wet paper tears, bunches, and hides your line. It also drags on the blade and makes the cut ragged. The dots are the map. Once they are in the skin the paper has done its job.
Can you see the dots?
If the holes are hard to see, rub a little flour over them. The flour sits in the holes and the outline jumps out. Wipe it off after you carve.
Other ways that work
Transfer paper slides under the page and leaves a solid line instead of dots. A tracing wheel makes the holes in one pass. A ballpoint pressed hard leaves a dent you can follow. All of them end the same way: the paper comes off before you cut.
