How to Make a Carved Pumpkin Last Longer
A carved pumpkin usually looks good for three to five days. To stretch that to a week, coat every cut edge with petroleum jelly, keep the pumpkin cold and out of direct sun, use an LED light instead of a candle, and give it an hour in cold water if it starts to wilt.

Carve later, not earlier
The best trick is the simplest. Carve two or three days before Halloween. Nothing you do afterwards beats starting later.
Seal every cut edge
Cut edges lose water fastest. Rub petroleum jelly over all of them, inside and out.
Keep it cold
Heat and sun are what kill it. Put the pumpkin in the fridge or a cold garage overnight and bring it out in the evening.
Give it a cold soak
If it starts to wilt, put the whole pumpkin in cold water for one to two hours. It drinks the water back. Dry it well after, or the sitting water grows mould.
Skip the flame
A candle cooks the lid from inside and dries the whole thing out. An LED gives off no heat and lasts all night.
What does not work
Hairspray, floor polish and craft sealant get recommended a lot. They trap moisture in, can speed up rot, and are flammable near a flame. Stick with jelly, cold and water.
