Advanced Pumpkin Carving Ideas

The next step past a clean face is not a harder face, it is etching. Scrape off the orange skin and leave the flesh, and light glows through soft instead of sharp. Combine cut-through, thin etch and shallow etch on one pumpkin and you get shading a plain cut cannot produce.

Etching changes everything

Cutting makes a hole. Etching makes a glow. Scrape off the skin and leave the flesh underneath. Do both on one pumpkin and you get shading. Cut the eyes so they blaze, etch the cheeks so they glow.

Go three levels deep

Cut through for the brightest parts. Etch thin for a strong glow. Etch shallow for a faint one. Three depths on one pumpkin reads like a photograph.

Thin the wall more than feels sensible

For etching, take the wall down to half an inch, thinner where you want the most light. Hold a torch inside as you work and you can see how much is left.

Cut small first, always

On a detailed design the order is not optional. Start in the middle, do the smallest cuts, work outward.

Watch your bridges

Every white piece needs something holding it. Anything under an eighth of an inch will probably give way. We measure this on every design we publish, and the ones that shatter do not go in the book.

Questions

What is pumpkin etching?
Scraping off the orange skin without cutting through. Light glows softly through the flesh instead of shining through a hole.
How thin can a pumpkin bridge be?
Under an eighth of an inch a bridge is fragile. Under a sixteenth it usually fails. We test every design by opening the keep-material at those widths.
What tools do I need for etching?
A loop gouge or a small clay ribbon tool. A knife will not do it.
